Jackson EMC is warning customers of a door to door scam that targets EMC security customers.

Mark Owen, spokesman for the utility, said the scammers will come door to door, pretending to be with EMC Security or Honeywell and say they are there to upgrade services.

"The pitch is very simple, 'We're here from EMC Security' or 'We're here from Honeywell to upgrade your equipment," said Owens. "The problem is, those people are scammers... what they're trying to do is to get you to sign a contract with a different security company."

Owens said Jackson EMC will never send someone to your house without an appointment. "We would always speak with you beforehand, and even if someone does show up representing EMC security, they should have an ID. You should immediately ask for proof of insurance."

Owen said they've had reports of the scam from all over North Georgia, and it seems to pick up during the summer months.
