Clarkesville animal owners face 341 charges each in cruelty case

CLARKESVILLE — Two Clarkesville residents turned themselves in to the Habersham County Detention Center Wednesday facing hundreds of charges related to an ongoing animal cruelty case.

Teresa Ann Bramblett and Clarence Edward Bramblett are charged with 340 counts each of animal cruelty and one count each of holding or possessing a game animal without a permit, according to Habersham County Animal Care and Control Director Madi Hawkins. Bond was set at $10,000 for each defendant.

A complaint of barking dogs on April 12 led to an investigation and search warrant served by Habersham County Animal Care and Control officers just outside Clarkesville.

As a result, more than 400 animals, including more than 300 dogs, were impounded. Other animals included cats, goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs, chickens, ducks, doves, chinchillas, a llama, a horse and a squirrel.

Agencies assisting included Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society of Northeast Georgia, Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement Unit, Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society, Northeast Veterinary Hospital, Cornerstone Animal Hospital, Dr. Soveig Evans, and Victoria Stillwell.

Hawkins said roughly 40 dogs have been retained by Habersham County Animal Care and Control. Those animals are expected to be available for adoption in the future, after they receive required medical care and socialization.

“A majority of these animals are requiring extensive follow-up veterinary care,” Hawkins said Wednesday. “All animals will also be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.”

Hawkins asks the public to wait for Habersham County Animal Care and Control to release more information about the adoption event rather than tie up employees with inquiries about adoption.
