Alto woman arrested following PIT maneuver in Habersham County

An Alto woman was charged with reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer and crossing guard lines with drugs after a deputy performed a pit maneuver on her vehicle in Habersham County on March 21.

A report from the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office said a Cornelia Police Officer advised a deputy to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Karina Garcia, 20, on Level Grove Rd. turning onto SR 365 South. Garcia was reportedly driving at a speed of 80 mph in a 65 mph zone, and the area was out of the officer’s jurisdiction.

The deputy was able to catch up to Garcia’s vehicle, observing it travel in the left lane and change to the right lane, allegedly almost striking the front of a tractor trailer and almost causing a wreck. The vehicle then made a u-turn on the highway before taking the northbound exit ramp back onto Level Grove Rd., where it reportedly did not stop for a stop sign.

The deputy attempted to pull the vehicle over, but Garcia continued to accelerate her vehicle, according to the report. The pursuit ended when the deputy performed a PIT maneuver and placed Garcia under arrest for reckless driving and fleeing and attempting to elude.

A medical unit was requested at the scene, but Garcia refused treatment.

Once Garcia was brought to the Habersham County Jail, a female jailer reportedly located a bag filled with a white crystal like substance on her.

The bag was placed in evidence. Garcia also received a charge of possession of methamphetamine in the incident.
