Basketball: Johnson names Mullis new Lady Knights coach

By AccessWDUN

OAKWOOD — Johnson High School announced Friday that Duke Mullis has been selected as its next girls basketball coach.

Duke Mullis replaces Tiffany Russell, who stepped down as Lady Knights coach at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. Russell was the head coach of the Lady Knights for the past three seasons.

'We are very excited about having Duke Mullis join the JHS family," Johnson principal Stan Lewis said. "First and foremost, he is a man of character and integrity. Our student athletes will benefit greatly from his positive influence. Secondly, his knowledge of basketball and coaching expertise are reflected in his outstanding record."

Mullis is familiar with the area. He served as the head boys basketball coach at Flowery Branch High School for five seasons (2008-13). In addition, his resume includes head coaching experience at multiple levels: Middle Georgia College, Chattahoochee High School, West Forsyth High School, and Banks County High School. His career coaching record is 378-235.

“I am excited and grateful for the opportunity given to me to serve the  Johnson High School community," Mullis said, "The girls’ basketball program presents a great challenge and I look forward to the challenge.”

The Lady Knights went 0-26 this past season, have not posted a winning campaign since 2010-11 and have not clinched a state tournament berth since 2007.

Mullis is a native of Warner Robins. Mullis played basketball and graduated from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.

Athletic Director Jonathan Edwards added, “Coach Mullis brings with him a wealth of coaching experience and expertise. His numerous on-court accomplishments speak for themselves, but most importantly he is a man of high-character, and that is what makes him such a great fit for us.  We are very excited about the future of JHS Lady Knights basketball.”
