Girls basketball: Big first quarter propels Branch past Walnut Grove

WALNUT GROVE — No. 3 Flowery Branch opened the game with a 20-6 first quarter and then cruised to a 58-35 victory over Walnut Grove Friday in Region 8-AAAAA girls action.

The Lady Falcons (18-5, 9-2 Region 8-AAAAA) got 17 points from Julianne Sutton to lead the way. Taniyah Worth added 10 points and Lexie Sengkhammee had nine for Flowery Branch.

Flowery Branch took a 27-14 lead into halftime but used a big third quarter to blow the game open outscoring the Lady Warriors (7-18, 2-10) 19-8 in the period.

The Lady Falcons will close out the regular regular season on Saturday taking on Clarke Central on the road in a make up game from earlier in the season. Tip for the girls game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
