Girls basketball: Dawson County holds off Jefferson in season-openers

DAWSONVILLE — In a juicy season-opener between a pair of quarterfinalists in 2016, Dawson County held off Jefferson 68-56 Thursday night at the Dawson County gym.

The Lady Tigers (1-0) took a slim 11-10 advantage after the first quarter but extended it to 31-27 by halftime and opened up a 15-point lead behind the shooting of Calli Watson late in the third quarter. Jefferson battled back to within eight points in the fourth quarter but could get no closer.

Dawson County hit 8-of-11 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Watson led the Lady Tigers with 16 points, including five 3-pointers. Kaylee Sticker added 15 and Anna Lowe 10 for Dawson County. Emma Brown also had 9 for the Lady Tigers as nine different players scored.

Dawson County next wil take on Dunwoody on Monday in the Dawson County Tipoff Tournament.

Jefferson (0-1) next will play Douglass on Saturday in the Tabo's Tipoff Classic.
