Softball: No. 1 Buford takes pair of wins over ranked teams to close out regular season

SNELLVILLE — In a battle of two of Georgia's best teams, Class AAAAA No. 1 Buford held of Class AAAAAAA No. 5 East Coweta 1-0 Saturday at the Ram Classic at Parkview High School.

The Lady Trojans got the lone run in the top of the seventh when senior Samantha Thomas doubled to lead off the inning and then scored on a shar[ grounder by junior Hannah Jo Hyatt that the careened off her glove of the East Coweta first baseman into right field. Thomas, who was already rounding third, scored easily once the ball made the outfield.

It was a pitcher’s duel between two Division 1 commits. East Coweta's Kelley Lynch (Auburn-commit) took on Buford's Logan Caymol (Tennessee-commit).

Both pitchers only allowed just one hit and both pitchers struck out 10 in complete-game efforts. Caymol got the getting East Coweta in ordfer in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.

In the second game of the day, Buford (20-1) routed Class AAAA No. 2 Northside-Columbus 10-0 behind a 12-hit attack.

The Lady Wolves scored five runs in the second inning, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh to give junior pitcher Ansley Byers plenty of support.

Byers scattered three hits in a complete-game effort as no Northside batter reached second base.

Sophomore Mariah Wicker led the Buford offense with two hits, including a RBI triple. Sophomore Katie Perkins and junior Maddie Marchiando each had three hits for the Lady Wolves. Junior Gabby Benson had two hits.

The wins closed out the regular season for Buford. The Lady Wolves will be the top seed in the upcoming Region 8-AAAAA Tournament. They will play their first game of the tournament on Tuesday, October 4th, in the second round.
