No sign of missing kayaker in Lanier, search to continue for "foreseeable future"

By B.J. Williams

It's been more than a week since friends of Lam Dang Ma last talked with him. They, along with rangers from the Department of Natural Resources, have spent hours this week searching parts of Lake Lanier for the 19-year-old University of Georgia student.

Ma's vehicle was found at Two Mile Creek Park last Wednesday, the day after he was last heard from. On Sunday, rangers found his kayak in the area, but there was no sign of Ma.

DNR spokesman Mark McKinnon said rangers continue to search for the man.

"We are doing shore and surface searches right now. Aviation may fly the area later today," McKinnon said in a Thursday morning email.

McKinnon said DNR was not using side scan sonar any longer, since rangers had already searched the mostly likely places in the lake the man might be. Sonar turned up no information to pinpoint a search area.

"We will likely continue the shore and surface searches for the foreseeable future. No date has been set to stop them at this time," McKinnon said.

In addition to the search for Ma, rangers continue to keep their eyes open for Troy Landers Keijuan Harden of Atlanta. The 29-year-old Harden went missing in the lake August 12 in the area between Aqualand Marina and Port Royal Marina.
