Phone scam artists preying on Dawson County residents

By AccessWDUN Staff

In a scam similar to one that has been occurring in the Gainesville area, some Dawson County residents have been receiving phone calls from someone posing as a law enforcement officer, demanding money from potential victims.

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office, in a post on its Facebook page, reported it has received four reports of the scam, which is new to that area.

In the calls, a male phone caller claims to be Lt. Richardson with the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office. The man tells the citizen they have a federal grand jury summons and they face of fine of $2,500 or they'll be arrested. He orders the residents to purchase a money order or pre-paid debit card from Walmart and then turn the number over to him.

As other agencies have warned, the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office also said it will never solicit money, especially over the phone. The department has told residents if they receive a suspicious call, the activity should be reported to the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office at 706-344-3636.
