Rabun authorities report scammers posing as deputies

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

The Rabun County Sheriff's Office is warning area residents of scammers who are calling while posing as deputies and demanding money.

The sheriff's office posted to social media Thursday that it has received several reports of the scam.

"These callers are telling people they have active warrants and must pay over the phone to avoid being arrested or going to jail," the sheriff's office said.

Officials advised residents that the sheriff's office will never call to demand payment over the phone regarding a warrant or any other legal matter. They advised that anyone who receives a similar call should hang up immediately.
