CLEVELAND — White County residents soon could be asked to vote on liquor by the drink and Sunday alcohol sales.
During its work session Monday, the White County Board of Commissioners decided to bring the ballot issue up for a vote at next week's regular meeting.
If commissioners approve placing separate alcohol questions on the ballot, voters would be asked to make their wishes known in a November referendum.
Not all commissioners, however, are keen on the idea — especially regarding liquor sales.
Commission Chairman Travis Turner pointed to the county's quality of life and told his fellow commissioners, "It disappoints me, 60-70 years ago, you know generations ago, spent removing this from our community and we feel like we need to bring it back."
Other commissioners say they just want to give businesses in the county equal footing with those inside Cleveland.
Cleveland voters recently approved Sunday alcohol sales and liquor by the drink.
Monday's alcohol sales issue came up following a discussion by commissioners about revising the current alcohol regulation to allow craft breweries to offer samples. Currently there is one in White County.
For now, craft breweries can fill growlers, or large containers, but not offer samples of their products to prospective customers.
