Cleveland sees flooding as culvert collapses amid Friday storm

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Heavy rains fell across Northeast Georgia on Friday evening, with the city of Cleveland reporting flooding and some damage as a result.

Bryce Barrett with White County Public Safety said the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, as more than three inches of rain fell in the span of a few hours. Emergency crews had already responded to the southern side of the city of Cleveland minutes before that.

Cleveland City Administrator Kevin Harris said the heaviest flooding was in the area of S. Main Street (U.S. 129).

"The major flooding was on 129 South down past the courthouse, and some of the subsidiary roads on that side of town," Harris said. "We believe one of the GDOT pipes collapsed on that side of town."

A culvert reportedly collapsed on S. Main Street between the Cleveland Bypass and Old Highway 75 South, with heavy flooding also being reported along Quillian Street, Campbell Street and Underwood Street.

Barrett and Harris both said there were no injuries reported in the incident, with the waters receding later that evening and no active flooding still remaining as of Saturday morning. Other than the culvert, damage was reported at several businesses in the city.

A tree fell on a Little Ceasars restaurant on S. Main Street. The restaurant was evacuated, but no one was injured. Water damage was also reported to the Ace Hardware on Underwood Street and The Soda Fountain Cafe on W. Kytle Street.

Cleveland was the only city in Northeast Georgia so far to report major flooding amid Friday's storms.
