The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has arrested a former Barrow County Sheriff's Deputy on several charges, including two counts of sexual assault against a person in custody.

The GBI annouced the arrest of 42-year-old William Stephenson Mitchell in a release Friday night. The arrests stem from an investigation into a March 12 incident where Mitchell was transporting a female to the Barrow County Jail.

The accusations were first reported to the GBI by Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith just over a week later. Mitchell was terminated before the charges were brought and he turned himself into the Barrow County Jail without incident.

In addition to the sexual assault charges, Mitchell faces one count of false statements or writings and one count of violation of oath or public office. The GBI is still investigating the case. Mitchell had been with the Barrow County Sheriff's Office for eight years according to the release.
