A 19-year-old Gainesville man was killed and three people in the vehicle he occupied remain hospitalized in critical condition after they were involved in a crash with an allegedly impaired driver.
The Georgia State Patrol said Jonathan Flanagan, 22, of Dahlonega was driving a Mitsubishi Endeavor northbound on Thompson Bridge Road (Georgia 60) when he failed to maintain his lane and hit a southbound Hyundai Sonata being driven by Elizabeth Alvarez-Perez. The victim, Jesus Alvarez-Perez, the driver's son, was one of three passengers in the Sonata.
Cpl. Spencer Munger said all four occupants of the Sonata - two of them juveniles - were taken from the accident scene to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in critical condition. Jesus Alvarez-Perez died Wednesday morning as a result of the injuries he suffered. The three other people remained unconscious in critical condition at last report.
Flanagan also was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Munger said Flanagan has been charged with 1st degree vehicular homicide, DUI drugs, three counts of DUI serious injury by motor vehicle and a list of other traffic and criminal charges. He said Flanagan will be transported to the Hall County Jail when he is released from the hospital.
The head-on collision happened just before 9:30 p.m. near Price Road in the North Hall area.
