A math and science teacher at World Language Academy, Academies of Discovery campus, has been named the Hall County School District Teacher of the Year for 2017-2018, officials said Tuesday.

System superintendent Will Schofield and Dr. Eloise Barron, assistant superintendent for teaching and learning, surprised Laurie Brown by showing up in her classroom to make the announcement in front of her students.

"I was overwhelmed with emotions, and, of course, totally surprised. It is quite an honor. I have had the privilege of working side by side with so many great and inspiring teachers through the years," Brown said for a system news release.  "I am truly humbled to have been selected to represent the many wonderful team members of the Hall County School District."

Brown is a seventh grade science teacher, eighth grade math teacher, middle school cross country coach and instructional lead teacher for the school's professional learning leadership team.

"I have had the pleasure of working with Laurie Brown for the past two years. She is an inspirational teacher and instructional leader. Her colleagues look to her as a role model and the students in our school often refer to her as their 'favorite teacher,'" World Language Academy AOD Principal Laurie Hitzges said.

Brown, who worked in the medical field before becoming a teacher in 1997, will compete against other system winners in the state for Georgia Teacher of the Year.
