BUFORD — Buford completed its comeback from the consolation bracket Thursday night with a 5-3 win over Walnut Grove in the decing game to capture the Region 8-AAAAA title.
The No. 2-ranked Lady Wolves (24-2) had to win two games Thursday to take the crown after falling to the No. 1 Lady Warriors on Tuesday. In fact, Buford staved off three elimination games over the final two days.
In the decidng title game, Buford built a 5-0 lead going into the final inning with a run in the first, two more in the third, and then single runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. But the Lady Warriors did not go quietly.
Walnut Grove scored three times in the top of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate before Buford was able to get out of the inning and seal the win and region title.
The Lady Wolves took a 7-0 win over Walnut Grove in the first game on Thursday.
Buford will go into next week's Class AAAAA state tournament as the top seed from Region 8-AAAAA. Walnut Grove will be the No. 2 seed. The two teams met in last year's Class AAAA state title game.
