It seems as if there's a new scam alert every week in North Georgia, and this week is no different.
Oakwood Police have issued an alert, saying that a scam artist is calling local residents, claiming to be Georgia Power Company's "disconnection billing department." Detective Danny Sridej said in a press release that the scam artist advises the victims to pay a past-due bill with a credit card over the phone in order to avoid disruption in service.
As in similar scams, the bogus representative also gives the victim the opportunity to go the store, buy a gift card and give the gift card number over the phone as a form of payment.
Sridej said the call-back number the scammer gives is 404-462-1062. The caller either gets the imposter on the phone or a message that says "You have reached the Georgia Power Disconnection Billing Department; please leave a message."
Sridej reminded residents to never give financial information over the phone to anyone. He also said customers can always call Georgia Power's toll-free customer service line to get help with billing information.
Oakwood police did not say how many people have received the bogus phone calls.
