HOMER - An Atlanta published report indicates the Atlanta Hawks forward with drug charges in Banks County faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC), Banks County Assistant District Attorney Sam Skelton said an initial court date for James Michael "Mike" Scott, 27, of Smyrna, could be months down the road.
Skelton told the paper his office awaits independent lab test results on the drugs authorities seized before putting a court date on the calendar.
Scott was the passenger in a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe that allegedly failed to yield to officers on Interstate 85 July 30. The driver of the SUV allegedly continued for two miles before stopping.
"The occupants advised that they did have marijuana in the vehicle. Deputies located over an ounce of Marijuana in the vehicle along with approximately 10.9 grams of MDMA, known as 'Molly'," Banks County Sheriff's Sgt. Carissa McFaddin said following the arrests.
The driver of the SUV, Antonn Imhotep Scott, 20, of Acworth, was charged with fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement officers, following too closely, felony possession of marijuana, and possession of schedule I drug. Mike Scott was charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of schedule I drug.
The AJC reported that the driver is Mike Scott's brother. The paper also reported that the Hawks' forward told authorities the drugs belonged to him. He was reportedly released on $8,100 bond.
In a statement to the AJC, Hawks organization officials said the team knew about the arrest and would not comment while the legal process plays out.
The MDMA charge carries a sentence of up to 15 years, while the marijuana count has up to a 10 year sentence.
