Hartwell troopers nab Commerce armed robbery suspects

HARTWELL - New troopers from the newest Georgia State Patrol post in Hartwell were able to lead the capture of a pair of armed robbery suspects Sunday afternoon.

Cpl. Matt Baxley of GSP Post 52 in Hartwell provided details.

"Around 1:30 or 1:45 today, Trooper Roger Fuller and Trooper Nick Johnson received a BOLO [be on the lookout] in reference to a yellow Ford Mustang that was involved in an armed robbery in Commerce," Baxley said.

That armed robbery happened at the Valero convenience store on Exit 147 in Commerce.

The troopers went to Interstate 85 to look for the  vehicle and a short time later located the vehicle traveling north and, with the help of officers from Franklin County Sheriff's Office, conducted a felony stop on the vehicle.

"During the course of their investigation, they discovered - with the help of Commerce P.D. - that the suspects were indeed the armed robbery suspects, and they were taken into custody," Baxley said.

Baxley said the driver, Carl Garrett of North Carolina, was charged by GSP with DUI drugs, posession of marijuana, and driving on a suspended license.

The passenger was identified by Baxley as Shahed Scott of North Carolina.

A handgun and currency were located in the vehicle.

"Everything went without incident," Baxley said of the capture on I-85.

Commerce Police Department charges on the men should be available Monday.
