Track and Field: Banks County sweeps 7-AAA meets

DAWSONVILLE -- Banks County swept the Region 7-AAA track and field championships Thursday at Dawson County High School.

The Lady Leopards piled up 156 points to 122 for host Dawson County to win the title. West Hall was third with 99, Lumpkin County fourth with 96, and Franklin County fifth with 94.5 points. Fannin County was sixth with 41 points and East Hall seventh with 14.5 points.

Bree Teasley of Franklin County won the 100- and 200-meter events. She also won the long jump with a leap of 17-feet, 7-inches. Banks County’s Carli Broome won the 800 with Makayla Hewell winning the 1600 and 3200 for the Lady Leopards.

Kaitlyn Duncan of Banks County won both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. She also won the high-jump clearing 5-4.

West Hall ‘s Mackenzie Satterfield won the pole vault with a jump of 8-0. Lumpkin County’s Sydney Kinard won the triple jump with a jump of 32-2.

Dawson County’s Savannah Haberkam took a pair of gold’s winning the shot put and the discus.

In the boys meet, Banks County racked up 179 points to 135 for second place Franklin County. West Hall was third with 95, Dawson County fourth with 94, and Lumpkin County was fifth with 57 points. Fannin County finished sixth with 31 points and East Hall was seventh with 30.

Austin Pierce of Lumpkin County won both the 100 and 200 events. Logan Hubbard of Banks County won the 400 and teammate Beau Rush took gold in the 800 and second in the 1600 behind Jacob Poston of Dawson County. Jose Diaz of Banks County won the 3200.

Demetrius Walker of Banks County and West Hall’s Jay Crawford dueled each other in the hurdle events. Walker won the 110 and took third in the 300 while Crawford was second in the 110 and won the 300.

Trevae Cain of Banks County won the high jump with a leap of 5-10 and Dawson County’s Rhys Adams won the pole vault with a jump of 12-0. Banks County took the top two spots in the long with  Will Ledford taking first and Zack Walker second.

Franklin County’s Keandre Morrison won the triple with a jump of 41-3.25 beating East Hall’s Jeil Vargas by nearly a foot.

Franklin County’s Antoine Perry was dominating in the field winning the shot put with a throw of 45-9, nearly five feet better than second place Cole Smith of Dawson County. Perry also finished second in the discus with a heave of 111-6.25, which was two feet short of the winning toss by  Cody McPeek of Fannin County.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for the state sectionals, which will be held at various sites next Saturday. Region 7-AAA qualifiers will compete at East Jackson Comprehensive for a spot at the state finals.
