HIAWASSEE — Lumpkin County held off Haynesville (N.C.) Wednesday 46-43 to capture the Battle of the States championship trophy.
Jack Howard, who was named the tournament MVP, poured in a game-high 23 points to lead the Indians (13-2) to the title.
Brandon Zarate and Cal Thrailkill were named to the All-tournament team.
Howard scored 74 points in the three games.
The Indians led 28-23 at halftime but held Haynesville to just 20 second half points.
Lumpkin County next will play host to White County on Saturday before jumping back into Region 7-AAA play Tuesday against Dawson County at home.
