Weather service suspects tornado struck just south of Atlanta

By The Associated Press

PEACHTREE CITY - The National Weather Service (NWS) says a tornado has likely touched down in the metro Atlanta area Wednesday night.

Meteorologist Ryan Willis says NWS officials are "quite certain" that a tornado hit northern Coweta County and Fairburn and Palmetto.

Willis says a survey team will be sent to the area to evaluate the damage and to measure the storm's strength. There were widespread power outages as a result of the storm system which produced heavy rains across most of north Georgia in the late afternoon and early evening.

Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville recorded 2.24 inches Wednesday, bringing the total for November to 11.33 inches, seven inches more than the monthly average.

Meanwhile, the level of Lake Lanier Thursday morning was 1071.16, just over summertime full pool. Runoff from  Wednesday's rain will likely boost the level even more over the next few days.
