CORNELIA - A stranded vehicle was hit by a train near downtown Cornelia during Saturday night's storm.
Cornelia Police Chief Chad Smith, in a statement, said a minivan's driver became blinded by oncoming traffic and ran off the crossing, resulting in the vehicle becoming stuck.
The driver was able to get out of the van before it was struck by a northbound freight train.
Sr. Trooper Jason Stephens of Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa investigated the resulting crash.
Stephens said 83-year-old Curtis Martin of Cornelia was driving a 1998 Plymouth Voyager van east on Rosa Parks/First Street and was attempting to cross the railroad tracks.
"Prior to the train's arrival, Driver 1 [Martin] ran off the shoulder and got stuck, Stephens said.
The freight train struck the van in its right side with the front of the train.
There were no injuries, and Stephens said no citations were issued.
Norfolk Southern Police Department is conducting its own independent investigation of the collision.
