Scholarship established for Marines at UNG

DAHLONEGA - The Marine Corps League Upper Chattahoochee Detachment 665 has established the Gunnery Sgt. Francis "Frank" E. Cornell Scholarship Fund, an annual scholarship, with the University of North Georgia Foundation Inc. It will provide financial support for educational expenses for Marines attending the University of North Georgia (UNG). <br /> <br /> The award amount is $500 per recipient, per semester, which totals $1,000 per year to the scholarship recipient, with up to two recipients per semester. The scholarship award is renewable as long as the recipient remains eligible, as determined by the Financial Aid Office.<br /> <br /> "We are incredibly appreciative to the Marine Corps League Upper Chattahoochee Detachment 665 and their great support of deserving Marines who attend UNG," said UNG Foundation Chairman Richard D. White. "We are also grateful for their service to our country."<br /> <br /> The Marine Corps League Upper Chattahoochee Detachment 665 Commandant David Godfrey and Senior Vice Commandant William Stevens met recently with White to sign the memorandum of agreement establishing the scholarship. <br /> <br /> "One of the objectives of the Marine Corps League Detachment 665 is Marines helping Marines and fleet marine force corpsmen," Godfrey said. "We encourage and support them by providing a helping hand so they can serve ably as citizens as they have served our nation under arms."<br /> <br /> The recipient must be a Marine who has served at least 90 days of active duty and received an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps or have served as a fleet marine force corpsman. Additionally, the recipient must be admitted to UNG, with students on the university's Gainesville Campus receiving first preference, and must have a 2.5 GPA at the time of application. Interested students can apply for the scholarship through the Office of Financial Aid. <br /> <br /> "This scholarship is a great example of how a group of people can have an impact on students with similar life experiences," said Dr. Andrew J.
