Habersham County's Lockwood receives Georgia EMS Award

DEMOREST - Will Lockwood of Clarkesville was awarded the Joe Lane Cox Excellence in EMS award from the Georgia Association of Emergency Medical Services (GAEMS) at the organization's annual banquet held on May 2.

According to Jack Moody, director of Habersham EMS, "the purpose of this award is to recognize a worthy individual who is not employed in EMS, but has unselfishly donated his/her time and efforts to continue the improvement of emergency services at the state and/or national levels."

"Lockwood retired from Standard Telephone, where he served as Safety Officer," Moody says. "In that position, he promoted utilizing EMS/9-1-1 first and provided on-site aid until help arrived. Even though he is not a certified emergency medical technician (EMT), he has always recognized that early intervention pre-hospital means better outcomes for the patient."

"He served on the Governor's Office of Highway Safety Task Force, where he led many campaign tours of 'Buckle Up for Safety' across the state, promoting the use of seatbelts," Moody says. "His passion for child safety led him to become involved in safety education in our community. He recruited and received participation from all emergency service organizations in the area to hold a 'Ghost Out' program at Habersham Central High School prior to the high school prom to promote safety. This is now a regular multi-agency event, and Will Lockwood is our 'go-to guy' for high school safety and seatbelt education in Habersham County."

Lockwood is a long-term member of the Region 2 EMS Advisory Council and has served on numerous committees and task forces to support and promote EMS awareness. He currently serves as a bailiff in the Habersham County Courthouse. He also supports Clarkesville Fire Department, and has received its Volunteer of the Year Award for the past two years.

Joe Lane Cox was a public servant whose political career spanned nearly four decades. Mayor of Dawsonville, Cox died in 2012.
