GAINESVILLE - Members of the Gainesville-Northeastern Circuit Bar Association marked Independence Day by reading aloud the Declaration of Independence outside of the Hall County Courthouse Tuesday.
In a first for the local bar, lawyers who work in criminal and civil law, including defense attorneys, prosecutors, judges, law clerks and others, took turns reading from the sacred American document.
According to Hall County officials, public readings of the Declaration of Independence began as a grass-roots effort by attorneys across the country several years ago. This is the first time the Gainesville-Northeastern Circuit Bar Association has participated.
"Local lawyers are looking forward to joining together to celebrate our freedom and our commitment to preserving the constitutional judicial system that evolved from the Declaration of Independence," said Nicki Vaughan, president of the Gainesville-Northeastern Circuit Bar Association.
The reading included a flag presentation by local chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution.
