UNDATED - This summer's drought now covers all of Georgia after pushing its way to the Tennessee and North Carolina lines but a nearly month-long string of high temperatures in the 90s in Gainesville has ended.
The U.S. Drought Monitor says most of northwest and northeast Georgia are considered "abnormally dry" while the rest of the northern third of the state is in either a "moderate" or "severe" drought.
That includes southern parts of Hall, Habersham and Gwinnett counties and counties to the southeast.
HEAT WAVE
Meanwhile, a 27-day string of 90-degree-plus days ended Monday in Gainesville. The high Monday was 86 at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport and it climbed to 88 Tuesday - both still above average for the dates, by two degrees each day.
There were only seven days in July when the temperature did not reach 90 or above and on some days temperatures were 10 or 12 degrees above normal. The highest temperature recorded at the airport so far this summer was 97 on June 1, July 13 and August 3.
