Feds to probe river rules after girl's death

By The Associated Press
CUMMING - Federal officials say they plan to look into rules covering how outfitters do business along the Chattahoochee River after a 9-year-old girl's drowning last week.

They have said it appears that 9-year-old Anna Vanhorn of Peachtree City got caught up in a release of water from the Buford Dam while tubing Friday near the Forsyth and Gwinnett County line.

They now plan to look into regulations about when and where outfitters can put people on the river in relation to the dam's release.

Patty Wissinger of the National Park Service says officials plan to look into whether there's a way to tighten up federal regulations for outfitters, who must follow Park Service guidelines designed to keep people away from potentially dangerous water releases from the dam.
