Forsyth County Sheriff's Office shares tips to prevent thefts from vehicles

By Lawson Smith Anchor/Reporter
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office released tips to prevent entering auto thefts after receiving a slight uptick in reports throughout the week.

The agency said investigators received 10 separate reports over the past weekend, up from the two reports filed throughout the month of June. FCSO advised vehicle owners to take the following precautions to deter criminals.

The agency suggested locking doors and vehicles can prevent most thefts, as many suspects look for “easy” victims. Additionally, FCSO said to avoid keeping valuables, spare keys and garage openers in vehicles, as it can give suspects who enter a vehicle access to a residence. If these items must remain in a vehicle, drivers should hide the items, or lock them in the trunk of their car.

To prevent overnight thefts, the department said keeping exterior lights on throughout the night can prevent suspects from approving a vehicle parked in a driveway. Keeping a vehicle in a closed garage can also prevent thefts.

FCSo also emphasized that victims of auto theft should always file a report for missing items. The agency’s non-emergency line is 770-781-3087.
