Gainesville BOE approves cutting work, classroom days

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville Board of Education Monday night agreed to a work schedule that calls for reduced classroom days and faculty and staff work days.

Faculty and staff days will be reduced from 190 to 182, student days to 175.

However, Supt. Merrianne Dyer said 15 minutes is being added to each school day resulting in the equivalent of 181-and-a-half days of instructional time.

The board has also tentatively adoped a $53.7 million budget, using the current tax rate, 7.39 mills. The system ended the year with a $6.3 milliion fund balance.

Dr. Dyer said the Board will use $3.2 million of reserves "to operate for FY '12. Increased expenditures are due to the increase in enrollment in FY 11 and the need to hire addtional teachers. A mid-term adjustment of $1.6 million was received for FY 11 due to the increase in student enrollment."

Gainesville City Schools increase enrollment in FY 11 from 6,646 students in K-12 to 7,171 students in K-12. There are an additional 180 students in Pre-K.

Dr. Dyer says the city school system is now the second largest school district in the Northeast Georgia Pioneer RESA district, surpassing Habersham County in enrollment this year.
