Heat wave continues; drought worsens

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
UNDATED - The late-spring heat wave continues, with another week of above-normal temperatures expected across north Georgia.

Monday will be the 18th straight day it has been hotter than normal in many places. The high temperatures at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville have been higher than normal for this time of the year each day since May 20. Highs at the airport have, at times, been running 10-12 degrees above normal.

Meanwhile, the drought has pushed deeper into north Georgia, now reaching as far as the middle of Habersham County. Gainesville and all of Hall County and other nearby counties have been considered in a drought for a week or so.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the area of "extreme drought" in the state has now expanded significantly and covers almost all of south Georgia and parts of middle Georgia.
