Hall mailing assessment notices Friday

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - The Hall County Tax Assessors will mail 75,420 notices of current assessment on Friday. As required by new state law, this annual notice will include a written explanation of the value of taxable property and an estimate of the property tax bill. It is not a tax bill.

The estimate of taxes is based on the current year's assessed value and the previous year's tax rate. The actual property tax rate will not be determined until it is approved by the Board of Commissioners on June 23. Tax bills will be mailed by the Tax Commissioner on Aug. 1; the first installment is due Oct. 1, and the second installment is due Dec. 1.

Property owners now have 45 days from the date of the notice to file an appeal via U.S. mail or in person. Appeal information, interactive appeal forms and FAQs can be found on the Tax Assessor's website at taxassessor.hallcounty.org.

About 30 percent, or 21,189, of the assessment notices will show a decrease in property value. On average, the decrease is about 28 percent. In total, Hall County s properties have lost about $590.5 million in fair market value countywide since last year. Also under new state law, properties sold the previous year must be valued at or below the purchase or acquisition price, including bank sales and foreclosures.

The Tax Assessors office is prepared to answer questions about the notices or the appeal process through e-mail at [email protected], by phone at 770-531-6720, or in person at the Joint Administration Building, 300 Henry Ward Way, Suite 203, Gainesville.
