'Crown Royal Bandit' gets 127-year prison sentence

GAINESVILLE - The so-called Crown Royal bandit was given a 127-year prison sentence by a federal judge in Gainesville Monday.

The sentence was imposed on 48-year-old Blairsville native Bruce Allen Hughes.

"He is, at the very least, one of the most prolific bank robbers in the northern district of Georgia's history... if not in the FBI's history," said Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Jackson.

U.S. District Judge Richard Story sentenced Hughes to 127 years in federal prison on charges of conspiracy to commit the armed robbery of 29 banks over 11 years.

Hughes pleaded guilty to the charges last August.

He received the nickname "Crown Royal Bandit" after using the Crown Royal liquor bags to collect money during the commission of several robberies.
