GAINESVILLE - The City of Gainesville has been hit with a $3,000 fine by the State Environmental Protection Division for two sewage overflows last year.
It's the spills sent untreated wastewater into Limestone Creek,a tributary of Lake Lanier, and the lake, itself.
The incidents occurred on Aug. 3 and April 21.
In the first case, 18,000-24,000 gallons of sewage overflowed because of grease clogging a line near Brenau Lake between Enota Drive and Lakeview Drive.
In the second, about 1,200 gallons escaped after a contractor failed to completely close a valve while replace a pump at pump station on Thompson Bridge Road.
