Creation research center developing at Truett-McConnell College

CLEVELAND - Science meets Christianity in a new Creation Research Center being built in White County.

Truett-McConnell College President Dr. Emir Caner said that the purpose of establishing the Creation Research Center is to reverse what he called the great divorce between science and theology.

"We will specifically undertake the task of understanding the creation as it is put in Genesis [chapters] 1 and 2 in the realm of science," said Dr. Caner.

Right now, the center is in what Dr. Caner called the "embryonic stages." In fact, it does not even have an official name at this point.

What the center does have is a director, Dr. Kurt Wise, who came to Truett-McConnell from a position as Professor of Science and Theology at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. According to a press release from TMC, Dr. Wise received both Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Harvard University, where he studied under the direction of noted scientist Stephen Jay Gould.

Currently, Dr. Wise is conducting research at the campus. Future plans include a Bachelor's Degree in Natural Science, which Dr. Caner hopes will be accredited by Fall 2010. He also envisions a geographical center that will host conferences and speakers. That should be in place by Fall 2011.

"North Georgia, if North Georgians don't know this, has the highest density of diversity in terms of plants and other things, outside of the tropics, in the world," said Dr. Caner.

That phenomenon, he said, makes this area the perfect place to study the creation.
