ATLANTA - Gov. Sonny Perdue has announced $37 million in grants for two of the state's community development programs... with four of them designated for northeast Georgia.
Toccoa is getting the biggest chunk - $590,000 - for a Multi-Activity Program; Ellijay is in line for $500,000 for sewer improvements; Hart County has been allocated $500,000 water improvements; and Hall County is on the list for $300,000 for housing improvements.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the funds to Georgia's Community Development Block Grant Program and Community HOME Investment Program.
About $32.6 million in CDBG funds will support projects in 65 Georgia communities, including water and sewer improvements, senior citizen and health facilities, and programs for at-risk children. The money will be administered through the Department of Community Affairs.
The CHIP funds, about $4.4 million, will help 15 Georgia communities provide more affordable housing.
"As communities large and small are making tough spending choices, today's grant announcement represents an important funding source for programs that improve quality of life, economic development and job creation programs," Gov. Perdue said.
