Ga.'s 'Crown Royal Bandit' to appear in court

By The Associated Press
GAINESVILLE - The so-called "Crown Royal Bandit" is scheduled to appear in federal court in Gainesville today for a plea hearing.

Bruce Allen Hughes' hearing is set for 9:00. He was expected to plead guilty in January to committing a series of robberies in Georgia and Tennessee over an 11-year-period but changed his mind at the last minute and asked for a jury trial.

Hughes was arrested in Madison County last year.

His nickname comes from him using a signature purple velvet Crown Royal bag to haul away his loot. Authorities say he robbed 28 banks in the two states, netting more than $300,000, before he was apprehended.
