Interim county manager named in White Co.

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
CLEVELAND - White County Commissioners have talked former County Clerk Jean Welborn out of retirement to serve as interim County Manager until the position can be filled on a permanent basis.

Welborn fills the position left vacant with the firing of Alton Brown last Thursday, following his arrest on a DUI charge.

Welborn retired in March after serving as county clerk for 18 years and prior to that was a legal secretary for 21 years.

She has filled in as interim manager three times before.

"Mama Jean," as she is known, said she is "honored to help the county out."

The announcement of her appointment came Monday during a special called meeting of the county commission.

Commissioners also instructed current clerk Shanda Smallwood to start the process to advertise for the next two weeks for applications for the vacancy.
