GAINESVILLE - The Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce Thursday honored Jacobs Media Corp. on the occasion of its 60th anniversary.

The recognition came at the chamber's monthly board meeting.

Chairman John W. Jacobs, Jr., and his son, John W "Jay" Jacobs, III, accepted on behalf of the company.

The elder Jacobs was one of a group of World War II veterans who formed what would become Jacobs Media Corp. and put WDUN (News Talk 550) on the air on April 2, 1949. Jacobs remains the only one of the original group still involved in the operation of the company which has grown through the years to include FM stations (WDUN-FM which became WYAY and was sold several years ago) and WMJE (Majic 102.9), which is still a part of the company. Also added over the years when the Federal Communications Commission changed the rules governing ownership in one market was WGGA-AM, now 1240 ESPN.

Jacobs Media held the original cable television franchise in Gainesville, which was also sold several years ago. The company now includes a travel agency (Wide Travel) and a news-oriented Web site, AccessNorthGa.com.
