Suspect gets 20 years after pleading guilty to manslaughter

GAINESVILLE - A guilty plea was entered Friday in a 12-year-old Gainesville murder case.

Hall County District Attorney Lee Darragh said Juan Bayona plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the 1997 shooting that killed Rigo Verto Verbuzco at the Burger King on Athens Street in Gainesville.

"He received a sentence of 20 years to serve in incarceration," he said.

Darragh said Bayona's murder charge was lessened for the purposes of the plea deal.

Bayona wasn't arrested for the crime until Jan. 21, 2008 in Durango, Mexico when Mexican police took him into custody after a fight at his home.
