The city of Cumming is hosting the first of what officials plan to become an annual Mental Health Summit later this month.
May is recognized by several national organizations as mental health awareness month. Cumming Mayor Troy Brumbalow plans to declare the month as such at Tuesday's upcoming city council meeting.
“We aim to break down barriers, foster understanding, and create a supportive environment for mental health conversations. Together, we can make a positive impact on the well-being of our community,” Brumbalow said in a release from the city Friday.
The summit will be held on Monday, May 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Forsyth Conference Center on Ronald Reagan Parkway. The summit will be conducted by the Forsyth County Mental Health & Wellness Advocates group.
One of the group's members, Mary Shaffer, outlined some of the speakers that will attend the event.
“Maureen Bixler, LCSW at Live Life Counseling, former Georgia State Representative, Mike Dudgeon, Commissioner Cindy Mills, and a special resident testimony will provide a clear picture of the mental health challenges youth are experiencing in the schools and wellness needs of the community," Shaffer said.
This year's summit will be titled "Faces of Mental Health."
