The 2024 hurricane season could be one of the most active on record according to early outlooks. The official start to hurricane season is June 1, while National Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 5-11.
This is a great time to begin your pre-season preparations. Officials with the Jackson EMC offer the following tips on how to be prepared and as safe as possible during the season:
Preparing now:
- Make a plan. It’s important to have everyone involved and prepared, so take time with your family to make a written storm plan. Remember to include any medical needs for your family. For guidance on creating a storm plan, visit ready.gov/plan.
- Prepare an emergency storm kit. Every home should have an easily accessible storm kit with household essentials. Be sure to include items such as food, water and medications. See jacksonemc.com/storm-center/storm-preparation for a storm kit reference list.
If a storm is approaching:
- Protect your home. Secure windows and doors, including the garage. Other precautions include trimming trees around your yard and moving loose items inside.
- Stay updated. Be sure to keep your devices fully charged when there's a threat of severe weather. Keep up with storm updates for your area by checking weather apps, local TV stations and websites like weather.gov. In addition to following local weather stations, follow Jackson EMC on social media for timely updates.
