AUGUSTA - The Medical College of Georgia is freezing hiring on state-funded positions to cope with budget cuts.
The state's only public medical school announced the plans Thursday afternoon. President Daniel Rahn says the freeze affects 70 positions from research assistants to accountants.
He says jobs such as security officers or positions involved in patient care are not affected. The hiring freeze is in effect indefinitely.
The Augusta campus is losing at least $17 million in state funding this fiscal year, which ends June 30, and expects even steeper cuts next year. The state is trying to fill an expected $2 billion budget hole.
