Is the worst behind for Ga. agriculture?

By SeNita McRae
GAINESVILLE - After a year of droughts and rising costs, the worst may be behind for Georgia agriculture . That's according to specialists from the University of Georgia who were in Gainesville Tuesday.

They were here for the Third Annual Agriculture Forecast.

Gainesville is one five cities on the statewide tour this year. The others are Statesboro, Dalton, Macon and Tifton.

Though agricultural took a hit in 2008 with droughts and rising economic costs, forecasters view 2009 as the "turn around point" for Georgia. However, the Dean and Director of the University of Georgia College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Scott Angle, says uncertain times make agricultural unpredictable.

John McKissick , Director of the Center for Agribusiness at UGA, says vegetables and fruits will do better this year. He also urged farmers to remain optimistic despite the economy. McKissick said that the worst for the "green industry" is behind us... he hopes.
