UNION CITY, Ga. - An official with the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office says a man awaiting sentencing after being convicted of hedge fund fraud has committed suicide.
Investigator Betty Honey says 37-year-old Kirk Wright of Marietta hanged himself in the Union City jail on Saturday. Wright was convicted Wednesday of leading an investment scheme that bilked millions of dollars from clients ranging from NFL players to his mother.
Wright faced a maximum of 710 years in prison and a fine of up to $16 million for the conviction. He already had been hit with a $20 million judgment as part of a civil suit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
He was set to be sentenced Aug. 26.
Honey said no foul play is suspected in Wright's death.
