Local authorities warn of "Georgia DMV" scam

By Will Daughtry News Reporter

A scam is going around the state of Georgia, and local authorities are warning residents of it.

The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) put out a notice about residents receiving fake text messages pretending to be from the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS).

In the messages, scammers will say that you have unpaid tickets, tolls, or violations.

Two reporters from AccessWDUN received the scam messages, with them alleging they are from the “Georgia State Department of Motor Vehicles,” which does not exist in Georgia.

The link attached is used to steal personal information or money from unsuspecting victims.

The text is in the photo slide above (click on the main photo then swipe or tap over).

In the text received on Tuesday, the scammers allege that if you do not pay the fine by May 28 (the next day), they will report the incident to the “DMV violation database,” suspend vehicle registration, suspend driving privileges, and that you may be prosecuted.

The best course of action is to delete the message and report it as junk or spam if that is an option on your phone.
