DULUTH - The ECHL released the schedule for the 2008-09 season today. The Gladiators open their sixth season in Gwinnett on Saturday, October 18th at the Arena at Gwinnett Center at 7:35 p.m. The 2008-09 regular season concludes at the Arena at Gwinnett on Saturday, April 4th at 7:35 p.m. The complete schedule is included with this release.
The Gladiators will again play 72 games with 36 at home and 36 on the road in the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League.
Twenty-six of the Gladiators 36 home games are weekend dates with nine Friday games, 12 on Saturday and five games on Sunday. Breaking down the Gladiators home schedule by month, there are three games in October, eight in November, seven in December, six in both January and February, five in March and one in April.
For the sixth straight season, the Gladiators will play on Thanksgiving Night, Thursday, November 27th at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett has average over 5,500 fans on the Annual Thanksgiving holiday match up during the team's first five seasons at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
The Gladiators will have a pair of back-to-back home games around the Christmas Holiday on Friday, December 26th at 7:35 p.m. and on Saturday, December 27th at 7:35 p.m. In addition, the Gladiators will again play a special Monday Matinee on Monday, January 19th at 12:30 p.m.
Gwinnett is slated to see three non-divisions opponents at the Arena at Gwinnett Center this season. The Dayton Bombers will be in town for a pair of games in November while the Elmira Jackals (ECHL Affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets) will visit the Arena at Gwinnett Center in December. Trenton will make a lone trip to Gwinnett in March.
The Gladiators are scheduled for one non-divisional road trip this season that sees Gwinnett battle 2007-08 Brabham Cup Champion Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL Affiliate of the Montreal Canadians & Nashville Predators) in March. The second half of the Gladiators northern road trip will take the team to Troy, Ohio where they will square off against the Dayton Bombers at the historic Hobart Arena for a pair of games.
The start times for the Gladiators games will remain unchanged with Friday and Saturday games beginning at 7:35 p.m., Sunday games at 4:05 p.m. and Monday thru Thursday games starting at 7:05 p.m. except the Gladiators January 19th MLK Kids Day Education game which will start at 12:30 p.m.
Began in 1988-89 with five teams playing in four states, the Premier 'AA' Hockey League has grown into a coast-to-coast league that will have 24 teams in 16 states and British Columbia playing 864 games from Oct. 17, 2008 to Apr. 4, 2009. Nineteen of the 24 teams have played at least five years in their current city.
The third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, the ECHL averaged 4,174 per game last season, marking the fourth year in row and the 16th time in the last 18 years that the league has averaged over 4,000 fans.
The Premier 'AA' Hockey League welcomed 3,756,191 fans, marking the fifth straight season and the 11th time in the last 12 years that it has exceeded 3.75 million fans. The 51 sold out crowds are the most in the last five seasons and mark the fourth time in the last five years that the ECHL has had at least 40 sellouts.

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary as the Premier 'AA' Hockey League in 2007-08, the ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in three states and has grown to be a coast-to-coast league that has 25 teams in 17 states and British Columbia in 2007-08. The 25 teams includes the Mississippi (Biloxi) Sea Wolves, who return after missing two seasons in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the expansion Elmira (N.Y.) Jackals. The ECHL will play 900 games beginning Oct. 18 and concluding Apr. 5.
