It was a night rarely seen in the playoffs anywhere.
There were only four matches scheduled in the second round of the Georgia High School Association soccer playoffs on Friday, but at around 9 p.m. all four were either in overtime or in a weather delay or both. For about 30 minutes, it looked like none of them would actually be able to finish.
But after things eventually calmed around 10:15 p.m., two teams had advanced, one lost in overtime, and another was suspended until Saturday due to weather.
In Class 3A, Chestatee took down No. 2 seed Richmond Academmy 2-1, on the road, winning in PKs. West Hall led 3-1 over Mary Persons before eventually dropping a heartbreaker, 4-3, in overtime.
For the War Eagles down in Augusta, the match was decided in the seventh round of penalty kicks. Yohann Reyna scored in regulation to tie the match at 1-1. Ryan Woodward collected two huge saves in penalties, including the last one to secure the victory on his 16th birthday.
Meanwhile, Johnson was leading Calhoun 1-0 after a goal by Junior Castillo in the first 10 minutes. But heavy rains forced the game to be stopped. Play never resumed and they suspended it until Saturday at 2 p.m. with 12:37 left in the first half.
For West Hall, junior Avila Alvarez scored a pair of first half goals and Fabio Ilizarbe Neyra added a goal in the second half and the Spartans held a 3-1 advantage with just 17 minutes left. But Mary Persons stormed back to tie the game at 3 late and sent it to overtime. Mary Persons was able to complete the comeback in the extra period and avoid the PK stage.
In Class A Division 1, Rabun County got a goal from Joseph Merino in the second overtime to escape an upset bid by Temple at home to advance to the quarterfinals.
