Gainesville fined for sewage spill

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
ATLANTA - The state is fining the City of Gainesville for a sewage spill.

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has proposed a $3,750 settlement for "unpermitted discharge to Balus Creek."

Gainesville Public Utilities Director Kelly Randall said the incident occurred in July in a line behind the Wal Mart in Oakwood. Randall said city officials estimated that as much as 50,000 gallons of sewage - over a period of one to six days - could have gotten into the creek but there is really no way to tell.
