Natural Resources officer believed shot by hunter

By The Associated Press
PORT WENTWORTH - The Georgia Department of Natural Resources initial investigation says the shooting of one of its officers by a hunter was accidental.

The shooting happened Thursday night in Port Wentworth near a railroad right of way not far from Georgia 21.

DNR spokeswoman Melissa Cummings said Friday that the officer, 56-year-old Corporal Curtis Wright, was listed in good condition after undergoing surgery. She said the hunter, who was not identified, mistook Wright for game.

Cummings said Wright was investigating a waterfowl complaint when he was shot. She said the hunter rushed to Wright's side and helped him out of the wooded area. No charges have been filed.
